TOPIC 3: Evolution of CALL

In today's post I want to share some information on how technology is being used for language learning over time. We will first take a look at the Progression of CALL (What is CALL?)
Behaviouristic CALL → Communicative CALL → Integrated CALL
Technology has given such a great influence on the teaching and learning practices of language. The methods of teaching and learning language have shown changes in their nature following the track of psychological advancements. Therefore, CALL has also experienced similar evolution.
Behaviouristic CALL 1960
Based on behavourist learning theory which mainly present the drill and practice type of software.
Communicative CALL 1970-1980
In this phase, computer continued to be used as a vehicle for language learning that created an environment where the usage of language become natural. This is the era of communication software which focused on the content and grammar was believed to be taught implicitly.
Integrated CALL
the phase of the integration of real-word materials into CALL which aims at teaching language skills in an integrated ways. It built on multimedia technology and enabling both synchronous and asynchronous communication between learners and teachers
Behaviourist and Communicative CALL are still in used up till now but very minimal even though they are considered outdated. This is because CALL has been changing following the development and advancement of technology we have nowadays.
